Hi, my son is 19 and has an EHCP. He is at mainstream college studying a level 3. Despite help he will not be able to step up after this and wants to do another level 3.

He is not ready to work, just wouldn’t manage it and will not entertain the idea of a supported internship.

Does anyone else know if the LA will fund another level 3 at 19? Considering there are not her options left for him.

I’ve heard that in exceptional circumstances they will.

Any ideas?

Many thanks.

You'd need to get it written into his EHCP and you'd need to have very good reasons why he should do it.

Reasons from a professional carry more weight than from family.

So your argument would be along these lines, hopefully with supporting evidence from college / any professionals involved

At 19 he is not ready to move on

At 21 he wants to be able to move on to university or manage a supported internship.

To get him ready he needs more time at college to do life skills/anxiety management/.... /another level 3

Just asking for funding for another level 3 with no strategy for an exit into employment/university is unlikely to work.

He should be able to apply for an advanced learner loan to fund himself if all else fails.
